£480 was raised for Cancer Research UK by generous Back to Netballers at a recent festival hosted by England Netball.

9 teams from Hampshire played in a friendly tournament, with Rebels taking home the winners’ medals, narrowly beating Knowle Hotshots in a well-contested last game, with Knowle taking silver.

The festival attracted Back to Netball teams from Southampton, Fareham, Gosport, Portchester, Hayling Island and two teams from Havant; playing in their first Back to Netball event.

Organiser, England Netball’s Community Coach, Debbie Laycock said: “It was a great afternoon. It was fabulous to have the Havant teams there; many of whom had only been back playing for a number of weeks! Our more experienced Back to Netballers were helping our new ladies and our volunteers, as always, were superb.”

She added: “There were a number of games that were only decided by a single goal and our eventual winners Rebels, actually drew their first game against Flyers, so it just goes to show how close it was!”

The charity festival ws hosted by Cams Hill School and organised by Laycock and her band of hardowkring volunteers, meaning every single penny raised went to Cancer Research Uk.

Laycock said: “We really couldn’t run these types of events without our volunteers, they really are worth their weight in gold. Thanks to our Portsmouth Pivotals players, who didn’t have enough players available to enter the actual tournament, but still turned up to help organise!”

Laycock was delighted with the amount raised and said: “I know through experience what a generous lot our Back to Netballers are. Not only did all they buy raffle tickets, but many teams bought extra prizes to contribute. Huge thanks also goes to Cams Hill School for their generosity. ”
